Scheduling Your Time

As a dyslexic I find time management to be extremely difficult, my mind is constantly thinking about so many things that any type of organization is hard. With practice I have found the following tips to be helping when it comes to organizing the tasks before me, which is an important skill while studying in college.

Try changing the tasks that you are working on every 20 – 30 minutes. If you are like me you get bored with tasks that you do not find interesting. Try studying for a subject that you do not enjoy for 20 – 30 minutes, and then schedule an activity that takes a few minutes of movement. Make a brief phone call, do your laundry. After a brief break study another 20 – 30 minutes.

The quick brake will allow you to concentrate more on the task at hand.

Find A Good Organizer And Use It.

I know several dyslexic individuals that use electronic organizer and other that prefer to hand written organizers. What one you decided to use is not important, as long as you use one.

While attending college you will need to learn how to schedule your day, spending 1-2 hours of study time for each hour that you are in class. Once you set your schedule you need to stick with it. One issue that many dyslexic students have is establishing a study schedule for tests. If the dyslexic student is not careful then the student can look at a brief outline, see that there are no tests scheduled for October in economics 101, and thus not study for this class. However, if a major test is scheduled for November 1 then the dyslexic student is trouble. This is why a detailed schedule is required for the entire semester

Time Management, an Example.

For example, you are taking American History 101; the class covers American History from the time of Jamestown to the Civil War. There is one major paper, a midterm and a final exam. From studying history in high school you understand that while history is not your worst subject, it certainly is not your best. Understanding this you decide to spend one hour on study time for each hour you attend class.

Your class meets for three hours a week, for 15 weeks, for a total of 45 hours during the fall semester. You therefore plan to spend 45 hours studying and working on your paper for this class during the fall semester. Your schedule for this class is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10-11 am, with a two-hour break between your next classe.

Setting up a study schedule is simple, after class take a few minutes off then sit down for 20-30 minutes and organize and review your notes. Then take a short break and spend 20-30 minutes outlining and working on your research paper.

With this constant review and preparation for your one major paper in the class you will know after about a mouth if you are devoting enough time for this class. If everything is working well then great, if not then you will know early enough to spend more time studying or working on your paper.

You will learn in college that grades are not given, but earned. By fallowing a similar schedule for all your classes above you will earn a good grade, and be prepared to enter graduate school, or a professional career, upon graduation.
