Attention Deficit Inattentive Disorder
Attention deficit inattentive disorder has been one of the most controversial and highly debated health issues in the medical community. In recent years umpteen numbers of theories regarding the causes and treatment of attention deficit inattentive disorder has been expounded but with no concrete evidence. However, most experts agree that although this disorder is primarily neurological in nature, many other factors too can trigger off attention deficit inattentive disorder. Although seemingly unusual, many factors are linked to food additives, over-use of caffeine, lack of exercise, heavy metal poisoning like that of lead, unstable home environment or learning disabilities.
Facts on attention deficit inattentive disorder reveal that as many as ten boys to a ratio of one girl suffer from this problem. Although children are more prone to attention deficit inattentive disorder, teens and adults are not far behind. The symptoms of attention deficit inattentive disorder varies from sleep problems, inattentiveness, forgetfulness, restlessness, inability to focus on a particular task for a specific period of time to emotional issues like depression, anxiety and difficulty in sustaining relationships.
These symptoms, though a common indication of ADD, manifest themselves in varying degrees depending upon the age group. Hence, a child will exhibit tantrums while a teenager will show poor grades in school which is not in keeping with his level of intelligence. Adults may have frequent mood swings, flit from job to job and change partners frequently.
Children are routinely prescribed Ritalin, a stimulant which supposedly curbs the unruly behavior of the child and calms him down making him more receptive to learning. However, more doctors are now turning to natural supplements and therapies to treat the root cause of attention deficit inattentive disorder as they believe that Ritalin only calms the child physically but does not improve the underlying cause of hyperactivity. Also, they are waking up to the adverse side-effects of these drugs. Such medications for attention deficit inattentive disorder are being known to cause nausea, convulsions, anxiety, hair loss, tactile hallucinations, insomnia, and uncontrollable contraction of muscles and self-mutilating behavior like chewing nails and fingers till they bleed.
If a child is showing signs of attention deficit inattentive disorder, he should be tested for environmental and food allergies. It may turn out that his favorite food is causing the allergy. Once the cause is known that particular food item can be avoided in the diet. A hair analysis can reveal the toxic levels of heavy metals in the body and checking the child for learning disabilities should also not be ruled out. Avoiding processed foods, packaged meats, butter and soft drinks in his diet and instead increasing his intake of fresh vegetables and fruits will help improve things.
The artificial colorings and flavorings, aspartame, preservatives, additives to be found in baked, packaged and carbonated goods are the prime culprits in triggering off hyperactivity in children. Attention deficit inattentive disorder can be controlled with proper management and the self-destructive behavior of ADD-affected individuals can be curbed to a large extent.
