Feb 16, Step 1 with 6 year old dyslexic

Giovanna, Mathias mother, has a 60-credit master’s degree, and works in the New York City public school district. She told me that Mathias teachers could have an adult conversation with Mathias. After talking with Mathias on Skype I found that he likes to talk about motorbikes. During these conversations I noted that in comparison to other subjects, Mathias understanding of motor bikes far exceeded his understanding of subjects that he was not as interested in.

Please note that dyslexic tend to be specialists in academics; well excel in a narrow area. General education students tend to be, comparatively, generalists, that can do well in most, or all subjects. This fact is that Mathias has extensive knowledge of motor bikes. Now, let’s use all that extreme brain activity in the front part of his mind to correct his reading and writing problems.

Step one, I asked Mathias if he know what an opinion and a fact are. A fact is true; Albany is the capital of New York State. An opinion is subjective, example, running is boring. I first asked Mathias, on the subject of motor bikes, if my statement was an opinion or a fact, during our first session. Mathias picked this up very fast.

Concerning Mathias, I do not wish to upset the field, however, current educational theories in how to teach dyslexic elementary school students are not efficient, and cause’s a lot of undo frustration for dyslexic elementary school students. What you must first understand is that the dyslexic functions drastically different then general education students brains. Please see the fallowing brain scan, conducted by Yale researchers:

http://dyslexia.yale.edu/Policy_ADA.html

Yes, I understand that everyone is now trying to fix the back part of the dyslexic brain, to make it more active, see the work of the fallowing company:

http://www.scilearn.com/

However, this is not the most efficient and effective method. Please note the extensive brain activity in the front part of the dyslexic brain, compared to the non-impaired brain. Why not use this extra brain activity to solve Mathias reading and writing problems?

Hello everyone, this is Russell Van Brocklen, editor of Dyslexiaconsultants.com, and yes, I am dyslexic myself. I am here today to start blogging about two major projects that we are working on right now. The first is to teach a 6-year-old boy, Mathias, to overcome dyslexia. Mathias has a form of dyslexia, is very smart, and is currently attending Kindergarten at a public school in New York State. Mathias mother, Giovanna, has kindly given me permission to document Mathias progress in overcoming dyslexia.

The second project is taking our basic writing course, which quickly resolves most of the writing problems motivated dyslexic high school and college students, and turn the course into a video course for the City University of New York. We are making our courses, in a video form, permanently and freely available to all qualified CUNY students because most CUNY students have significant financial challenges. So let’s begin.

Dec 4, How The Dyslexic Brain Functions Differently From General Education Students Brains

I would first like to thank the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity for conducting groundbreaking research in how the dyslexic brain functions differently than general education student’s brains. I am directing my readings to please fully study there website to acquire a better understanding about dyslexia.

In particular please visit the fallowing webpage (http://dyslexia.yale.edu/Policy_WhyChange.html). Please note that the back part of the dyslexic brain has significantly less brain activity then the general education student’s brain. This is an area where that a significant number of researchers have focused on, to try and change the brain function of dyslexic students to look more like general education students.

However, I disagree that this is the most efficient way to help dyslexic students overcome most of their writing and reading problems. Please note that the front part of the dyslexic students mind has much more brain activity then the general education students mind. Why not use this extra frontal brain activity to overcome most of the dyslexic students writing and reading problems. Then help the dyslexic student develop ideas so that they can make a significant contribution to society?

In the next blog post I will start to explain how to do this.

I recently spoke with Carolyn Malloch, assistant director of SUNY Albany’s Disability Resource Center. According to Carolyn Malloch, she often works with dyslexic students who are having trouble making the transition from high school to a competitive university. After working with students on time management skills, essay writing, and reading skills dyslexic students often increase their grades on exams to the 80’s.

What impressed me the most about Carolyn Malloch was the extensive support in all subjects that SUNY Albany offers their dyslexic students. If you need considerable assistant, and wish to study at a completive large public university, the please contact SUNY Albany below for more information.

Question:

I believe my child has dyslexia. She has barely passed each grade at school and is in the 5th grade. We have requested dyslexia testing and been told school do not test for that but we did get her an ADD diagnosis of inattentive type. my daughter is very well behaved and yet struggles daily with her work. I do not have the $900 + dollars to get her a private test. What can I do to help her?

Answer:

I am sorry to say that you may need to take legal action. Not only is the school required to provide the testing, but the school is also required to provide a reasonable education. Here is the controlling case on this issue:

Aug 9, Depression and Dyslexia

From a medical doctor's prospective dyslexia and depression are not related. However, it is the effect of the others telling the dyslexic student that they are stupid, repeatedly, that can cause depression.

I went through this growing up; I was the "stupid dyslexic". It is hard, but it must be done, to tell the dyslexic student to concentrate on what they are good at. Given the structural changes in the both the United States, and world economy, this is sound advice.

Going forward each of us will need to show the unique strengths that we each have, and how this can help the company we work for. This is where a dyslexic, focusing on the students strengths, has a significant advantage of their general education peers.

I created http://www.dyslexiaconsultants.com/ to provide the best general information on dyslexia online. In order to support the website I am starting an online tutoring business for highly motivated dyslexic high school and college students, using an innovative new approach based on the latest research in neural science, which was presented at the International Dyslexia Association, New York City Branch, in 2006.

In order to get a better idea about the capability of the online tutoring service I am offering, please visit www.TutorFi.com/demo and take a minute to view the video.

Aug 9, Dyslexia and typing for students

It is necessary for dyslexic's students to learn to type. I have worked with many dyslexic students to help them overcome their writing problems, and I found that when students type their writing greatly improves.

Instead of having trouble physically trying to write out the letters to a work, with typing the student just pressed a button. Spell and grammar checking is much easier as well, allowing the student to concentrate on learning to become a better writer.

As a dyslexic I learned typing the way I normally learn information, backwards. I started at the end of the book and worked backwards. This drove my teacher nuts, but it worked well for me. Your son needs the freedom to learn in his own style, so bring this point up with his teacher. If that does not work try the board of education, that always worked with my parents.

When working with dyslexic student's you need to focus mostly on their reading and writing skills. You will find that for math dyslexic students will range from poor students to the best math students in school.

I would therefore suggest that you focus your efforts on the dyslexic students reading and writing problems. To work on these problems please note that dyslexia, from a practical side, is mostly an organization problem.

Develop tip sheets for the most common mistakes that your student are making, and above everything, develop reading and writing templates to guide your students.

Secondary to organization is a need to have your dyslexic student’s work on analytical content that is in their area of interest. It is critical that you push your students to answer analytical questions on a subject that interests them.

Yes, I did the same job right out of college. However, I never told by boss that I was dyslexic because every time I did I found that it was only a matter of time before I was going to be fired.

People just do not understand how an obviously educated person could make all kinds of spelling mistakes. I used MS Word spell check on everything, and stayed late finish everything up.

I developed a program to help dyslexic individuals like yourself to overcome most of your selling and writing issues in about 50-100 hours of instruction. If you are interested, please contact me at:

dyslexi2@dyslexiaconsultants.com

We worked with Helene Hewitt's son Adam, who had similar spelling issues that you have, you can contact her at Heenie58@yahoo.com for a reference.

I apologize in advance, but I am going to tell you the answer that most parents do not want to be told. For dyslexic students it is critical to resolve academic problems as early as you can.

If you go to any major dyslexia conference in the United States, almost every program is K-3rd grade, and based on Dr. Orton's work. After grade 3, the dyslexic student is generally so far behind that significant intervention is needed.

I would therefore recommend that you keep your daughter in a special school until at least the end of third grade. Below is a link to the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, they can teach you best on how to educate your daughter.

Aug 1, Dyslexic College Student Advise

Hi,

My son just finished his first year in college and did "ok". Has anyone had a dyslexic learn to speed read? Does it work? Would appreciate any help and suggestions! Thanks!

According to Dr. Sally Shaywitz, The Audrey G. Ratner Professor of Learning Development at Yale University School of Medicine, the answer to your question generally is no, dyslexia and speed reading do not mix well. As Dr. Shaywitz stated on her website, http://dyslexia.yale.edu/Policy_ADA.html:

“Neural system (word-form area) for automatic, rapid reading is impaired in dyslexia; other areas provide compensation for accuracy, but not for speed.”

As you can clearly see from Dr. Shaywitz’s research, the front part of the dyslexic student’s brain is considerable overactive compared to a general education students brain. Therefore, since a dyslexic student cannot speed read anywhere near as well as their general education peer’s, the solution is to use this overactive part of the brain to processes the solution much faster than a general education student can.

For example, while attending law school students are required to read and answer extremely complicated multiple choose questions. The general education student will be able to read the questions much faster than a dyslexic student will; the dyslexic student can be trained to process the information much faster than the general education studentcan .

So have your son focus his efforts on processes information much faster, not trying to read faster. I developed a process to do this for myself while going through higher education, and I can show other dyslexic student’s to do the same.

Jul 28, Dyslexia Adults concerns.

I completely understand where you are coming from. I was tested for years in public schools, and the tests told me next to nothing practical, for example, how do I overcome dyslexia?

Finally at age 27 I had a real Ph. D. conduct tests over two days and found the problem. The dyslexic brain work’s differently than general education students' minds. The fallowing webpage illustrates this concept:

http://dyslexia.yale.edu/Policy_ADA.html

To help adults learn to spelling and grammar rules I found the best way to do this is to not teach this directly. Please note on the above webpage how the front part of the dyslexic's brain is overactive? Why not use this extra brain activity to overcome an adults spelling and grammar issues?

I focus on organization skills, using graduate school level content, which allows the dyslexic brain to generally self-learn spelling and grammar, without much direct instruction in the subject.

Jul 28, Dyslexia, can I go to schoo?

I need help my daughter is 10 with dyslexia. I have been home schooling her because I want to give her the proper care she needs. I have ordered a program for dyslexic children and it has been working wonderfully but she still cant read at her level. She wants to go to public school but I am scared to put her in there. Some teachers arent properly adequate to teach dyslexic children and I dont want her to get teased or bullied in school but she cries to me all the time that she wants to go. I would love for her to be able to go. It breaks my heart please someone help me.

I understand what your daughter wants, and the pain that most likely will come in public school. It is what I went through as a child.

I would strongly recommend that you allow your daughter to attend school, if that is her wish. In order to reduce the bulling, helping her overcome her reading issues, as much as possible, would be helpful. The following is the fastest, and least expensive program that I found to help dyslexic students your daughter’s age:

http://www.scilearn.com/products/fast-forword-reading-series/

I would encourage you to find what subject your daughter really enjoys, and have her pick out a book on that subject at the local library. Have her read one book every week or two on favorite subject. Overtime she will develop a significant knowledge base. At some point in time in the future the mean students would make fun of her for being a smart student, not about her dyslexia.

While it is not nice being made fun of, it is a lot better when you are being made fun of for being a smart student, then for being dyslexic.

I understand where you are coming from, dyslexia can be hard to overcome, and all we need is a better way to overcome the condition.

First, for reader’s that is looking for the best traditional dyslexia school, that can solve your child’s academic problems, please visit the Gow School's website:

http://www.gow.org/

For more developments that are recent I created two basics programs for motivated dyslexic high school students to overcome their writing and reading problems. Please review the fallowing website from a leading dyslexia researcher:

http://dyslexia.yale.edu/Policy_ADA.html

Please note how the front part of the dyslexic brain is a lot more active than a general education student’s brain. By focusing on this overactive part of the brain, I found a way to bring the dyslexic high school students writing and reading skills to the college level, but focusing on college level content.

This is the better way of learning I think you were looking for.

I have an 8th grader who up until this point has been progressing in School. This past year the School and I have come to a road block. He seems to have dropped with his grades and all the school wants to do at this point is medicate him. He has been evaluated and is on a low dose of meds. The school does not want to give me a game plan as to what next year will consist of as to his education program (Wilson program ect.). What can I do as I don't want his to have a year like last year. What are my options to make the School truely meet his needs?

It is looking like your student is giving up. I would strongly suggest that you contact the students’ parents, set up a meeting, and find out what the main issue is.

The Wilson Reading Program is a good program. I would find out what subject the students enjoys the most, then create a reading program based on that subject matter.

For example, if the student enjoys reading about animals, have the student pick out one book to read each week or two from the library on that subject.

The student will need to read the book, and write a short essay on the book. This will go a long way towards getting the student motivated again, as well as increase the students reading and writing skills.
