Dyslexia in Children
Dyslexia in children has reached alarming proportions as research studies indicate that 40% of the American children face problems when learning to read or read aloud. Out of this percentage three-fourth of the poor readers would continue to remain in similar condition even when they attain high school standard. Reading and learning are the prime aspects that govern a child’s future success and Dyslexia in children refers to the child who has average or above average IQ but their reading is below grade level.
The symptoms of Dyslexia in children are numerous. Amongst the most prominent signs are reversals of letters as these children get confused with the letters “b” and “d” when reading or writing. Another remarkable feature of Dyslexia in children is “elisions” indicating the tendency of the child to read and write “cat” when they actually mean “cart”. Dyslexia in children is apparent in those kids who read slowly and hesitate before formulating words, is not fluent and constantly loses track of words in the passage. In general, these affected children have reading problems.
Dyslexia in children suggests that the child may try to sound letters of the word but unfortunately utters the words which have no bearing with the correct word like sounding letter “cat” but saying “cold”. Dyslexia in children very often leaves the affected child frustrated and angry owing to their tendency to read a word in a slow order or pronounce syllables in the wrong order. Poor comprehension power and slow hand writing are some of the common traits of Dyslexia in children. The negative school experience is manifested in behavioral problems of a Dyslexic child.
Dyslexia in children may turn a child into a criminal if the symptoms go undetected or if they fail to find solace under special educators who use updated techniques to teach them and bring them into the mainstream social order. Dyslexia in children has resulted in nation-wide awareness about this affliction. Today the emphasis is on developing basic skills like concentration, visual discrimination, proper perception and memorizing skills. Till the affected child masters the basic skills, it would be impossible for him/her to learn reading, spelling, calculating sums and writing.
Many teachers, parents and care givers are responsible for educating and supporting a Dyslexic child. They are equipped to handle such children and are also trained to patiently teach the child suffering from Dyslexia. Helping children with Dyslexia goes a long way in building a society that is healthy and energetic. It is the social responsibility of any nation to keep a watch, be able to detect and arrange proper treatment for Dyslexic children. There are numerous education programs, especially trained educators and care givers, etc., in any civil society that are fully prepared to extend all possible help and assistance to children affected by Dyslexia. These children deserve affection and emotional support to overcome their inherent difficulties in order to turn into normal and healthy individuals who later lead a successful life.
